RACE REPORT |
||
After the snow of Round 2, the teams were greeted by clear skies and the forecast of a hot summer day at Whilton Mill. We weren't to be disappointed. Red Stripe were back after an enforced lay off. Borney 62 & Red Mist also returning after missing the second round 3 Bilands, 1 TKM 2/ & 11 Rotax's made up the grid. Maintenance (71) was missing due to James breaking his ankle. As practice got underway Box Tech (40) were struggling for pace with an engine down on power. After numerous jet changes, plug changes & battery changes with no resolution they decided to change the engine as qualifying began. Saxon (65) in the Biland took the pole in 49.42, second was KKC (72) in 49.43 with Red Mist (88) third with a 49.57 Box Tech didn't make it out so would start last and hope that the change worked. Saxon made a perfect start, leading KKC into turn one. Ministry Of (35) had a great start passing Red Mist (88) to take third. Box Tech starting last took the first lap easy to assess the engine change & to ensure all was well with the rebuilt kart. On lap two Ministry Of passed KKC to move up to second, they would swap positions regularly before KKC would be sidelined with a problem coming down to Ashby's. Russell Brewis piloting the Box Tech kart had now put the hammer down and started to reel off a succession of fast laps to carve his way through the field. In just 17 minutes the Box Tech kart had overtaken the field to claim first position. A quite outstanding performance. Once Box Tech took the lead the following karts managed to hook onto its tail and stop a break away. With an hour gone,Box Tech held a 2.10 second lead over Saxon with Red Max 10.21 seconds further back, having starting in 10th. As the race settled down, the mid pack began to shuffle around with Red Mist & Stanion Slick the main gainers moving from 9th & 8th respectively to 4th & 5th by the two-hour mark. Box Tech had stretched their lead to 46.6 seconds over Red Max. Ministry Of were now the leading Biland in third. Red Max would then suffer a problem at the half way point that would curtail their racing for the day and lead to an early bath. With three hour gone Box Tech had nearly a three-lap lead over the Ministry Of's Biland. Stanion Slicks had continued their march up the leader board and were now third with TT Sport in fourth. Le Maverick were having a difficult day and after a number of visits to the pits their race was over. An engine rebuild would hopefully resolve their issues by the next race. As the clocked ticked down to the finish both Ministry Of & Stanion Slicks would have problems that would drop them down the field. Box Tech had been struggling with fuel economy throughout the day and a splash & dash would be needed to see them to the end. As the checkered flag fell Box Tech took the win from TT Sport in second and Red Stripe, making their comeback, third. |
