RACE REPORT

Round 6 of the 2007 OEKC Summer Championship was held at Daytona Milton Keynes on 5th August.

A very sunny pit lane greeted the teams to what is always an early start at Daytona MK. The weather would certainly be an added bonus to what would be a very enjoyable days racing for the majority of the teams, although mechanical issues would hit the majority at some point throughout the day. Saxon Motorsport were busy with the Saxon Super Series leaving Red Mist as the sole Biland representative & TT Sport were still out, both teams however will be back for Round 7 in September. The Rotax contingent had eleven teams entered plus a couple of teams spectating who will be also joining the Championship at the next round when their karts are delivered.

Practice started at 9 sharp with Appliance Maintenance keen to get on track to run in their newly rebuilt engine before qualifying. The temperature was steadily climbing and tyre pressures woud be critical for the race.

Red Mist in their Biland took the pole from the Rotax of Red Max & the Prokart chassis'd Rotax of Appliance Maintenance.

After two warm up laps Red Max got the jump over the start on Red Mist and lead coming through turn one. Box Tech too made a clean start and overtook Appliance Maintenance to grab third. The Litigators had dived into the pits to make adjustments and where now trailing the pack by a lap. Coming into the hairpin at turn 3 a number of karts in the middle of the pack made contact allowing Red Stripe and Boxed In to slip past. Fortunately none were damaged & all could continue.

Box Tech managed to slip past Red Mist and were now hot on the heals of Red Max, their closest Championship rival. Over the next 1.5hrs these two karts would be in a fantastic duel. However a sticking throttle would pitch Red Max across the kerb & into the tyres resulting in a puncture & smashed rim. They would suffer further mechanical issues and drop further down the results as the day unfolded.

APC suffered a broken Kingpin just 10 laps into the race, and unfortunately this was one of the few spares they didn't have and none of the other teams had a suitable replacement. Their race over before it had even begun. Boxed In were struggling for pace early on and a badly set power valve would prove to be the issue, duly rectified the kart was back up to speed. Although this would be just one of their problems throughout the day.

No Idea had returned for Round 6 and were still learning the race set-up of their kart. A broken chain would cause them to lose time waiting for recovery from the track but with a little help from the other teams they were soon back out on track and looking very fast.

There were a number of interesting battles out on track between Red Stripe FDM, Appliance Maintenance, Stanion Slicks and Le Maverick all trading positions throughout the day. Stanion Slick continue to improve their speed in the Rotax after their move from ProKarts.

The Litigators had been gradually moving through the field after but a misjudged overtaking manoeuvre saw their podium chances evaporate three quarters of the way through the race.

Red Mist in the Biland using the latest 'Cush Drive' sprocket carrier system had been working through their handicap laps throughout the race and without any drive train issues during the race had moved through the Rotax field to lie second as the race entered its final stage.

As the chequered flag fell Box Tech took a well-deserved victory from Red Mist. Red Stripe Racing were back on form in third.

Box Tech have now built a slender lead in the Overall Championship from Red Max. Red Stripe in third (on dropped rounds) have closed the gap so there is still plenty to fight for over the final two rounds.

The next round of the championship is at Whilton Mill on September 9th. We look forward to the return of Saxon & TT Sport along with some new teams who have committed to next years Championship. See you there.
